Members of the Yeovil Town Road Running Club have been out in force across the region
over the Bank Holiday weekend. At the Battle of Sedgemoor 10km in Langport, the race limit
of 500 runners was reached and some people were disappointed when they arrived late. Jill
Harrison enjoyed a successful first race as a member of the Yeovil club, winning the
Ladies race in 39m04, whilst the first Club man was Pete Jakeman who finished in 41m00.
Iain McCallum crossed the line in 44m44, ahead of Nigel Moysey’s new personal best of
46m41, and Rachel Hayton (48m12) held off the twin challenges of Jack Frost and Andy
Windram (both 49m58). Lesley Nesbitt ran well for her time of 51m46 after a race long
battle with Kirsty Norman (53m07) and Val Hales finished in a time of 1hr02m04. Adam
Hawkins (1hr02m10) took on a mentoring role for Katie Pearce, pacing her to a personal
best time of 1hr02m41 – more than 3 minutes faster than she’d run before. Corinne Hawkins
(1hr05m38) and Theresa Moysey (1hr10m19) both completed the 6.2 mile course, whilst the
accompanying Fun run was completed by both Brian Mountjoy-Row (12m05) and Deb Stanfield
(15m32).
Over in Sherborne, a number of the Club’s runners decided that they needed an extra
challenge and took part in the Oxley Triathlon organised by the Wessex Wizards. Phil
Whaites was the first club member to finish, in 18th place overall and a time of 1hr28m31
(although he was trailing in the wake of son Dan, who finished in an excellent third
place overall). Barry Harriss found the Sprint distance a doddle following the full
Ironman he completed earlier in the year, finishing in 1hr32m51, with Brian Kemp not
far behind in 1hr36m15. Paul Allen finished well in 1hr37m36 and it was nice to see
Scott Quayle allowed out of Cornwall for the weekend, and he ran well for his time
of 1hr46m06. Sue Whaites was first Club lady to finish, with 1hr48m53, ahead of the
battle between Bob Ashe (1hr51m06) and Graham Watts (1hr51m33), and Paula Goddard
was not far behind in 1hr53m08. Caroline Watts finished in 2hr02m46 and Pete Clements,
resplendent in the Club’s green and white, crossed the line in 2hr20m10.
Some of those who competed on Sunday weren’t quite finished, and travelled to
Baltonsborough to take part in the annual 5 mile road race on Bank Holiday Monday.
Martin Lascelles finished in an excellent 5th place in 30m33 to win the Male
Veteran 50 title, with wife Lin Lascelles not far behind as she finished as second
lady in 32m16. Sam Harvey (34m24) held off father Mike (34m25) in a sprint finish,
and Nigel Moysey shook off the effects of the previous day’s 10km to finish in
another personal best, 36m40. Darren O’Donnell ran well for his time of 37m22,
and Graham and Caroline Watts both completed the course after their triathlon
exertions (42m52 and 49m13 respectively). Marianne Hoffman finished in 51m37
whilst Adam Hawkins completed the event in a time of 53m27.
Elsewhere Simon Carr completed the Pewsey Half Marathon in 1hr48, and at the
Studland Country Fayre 5km Tom Fox kept his eyes firmly on the course to
finish in 25m04, ahead of Sue Fox (35m21). A small team of Club runners
travelled to Guernsey to take part in the Guernsey Marathon. Gareth Ashmead
ran superbly for a time of 3hr32m03 and wife Annie Ashmead finished in
4hr27m30 as she kept clear of the Debbie Neal’s 4hr41m23.

23 August 2010
The members of the Yeovil Town Road Running Club have been busy at home and abroad,
with new recruit Stephen Griffiths leading the way. At the Cologne Half Marathon, he
completed the race in a very creditable time of 1hr56m30. Another taking on the longer
distances was Robbie Hawkins, making his debut in the Club’s green and white at the
Standish Woodland Chase in Gloucestershire. For the first time racing over the 10 miles
distance, Robbie had to contend with a hilly course over the Cotswolds Way and finished
in 46th place and a time of 1hr13.
Terry Byrne completed the bike – run – bike course of the DB Max Duathlon in a time
of 1hr24m11.
At the Stourhead 5km, the Yeovil members made up nearly one third of the field so it
was fitting that it was Club member Dickie Wythe who romped to victory in a time of 18m22.
Rod Appleby showed the warm weather training had paid off as he finished in 26m34, holding
off the challenge of the fast finishing Lesley Nesbitt (26m41), whilst Kyra Hawkins suffered
for starting too quickly, finishing in 27m30. Amanda Inch and Martin Chaffey crossed the line
in 28m55, and Tina Partridge came storming home on 29m17. Adam Hawkins (30m28) finished ahead
of Jenny Hann (31m32) and Corinne Hawkins completed the course in a time of 34m03.
On Sunday the Club’s “Dorset Boys” were out in force. Jon Rowe and Tony Watts travelled to
the Foxtrot 5 near Bradford on Avon. It may have been called the “Foxtrot” but it was a dog
that attacked Jon halfway round! This didn’t stop him finishing in an excellent 15th place and
a time of 30m42, whilst Tony continued his recent good form by smashing his personal best over
5 miles to finish in 34m41 – enough for the runners to celebrate in the local pub afterwards
with a dodgy beef burger! Club Chairman took on a longer challenge in the form of the Dorset
Doddle, from Weymouth to Swanage, which he finished in 5hr58 for a superb 4th place overall.
16 August 2010
The members of the Yeovil Town Road Running Club have been busy again,
taking part in races across the region. Lesley Nesbitt travelled to
Devon for a holiday and couldn’t resist entering the Plymouth 6 Moor
Miles race, and where the uphills seemed to outnumber the downs,
finished the 6.4 mile course in 59m23, and Rob Adams finished the
Sidmouth Festival 10km in 51m31. Mike Regan went even further afield,
completing the Wibbly Wobbly Log Jog in Suffolk. After resisting the
temptation of studying all the flora and fauna on the way round, he
overcame a tough 5.5 mile route around the forest tracks and unique
single track, formed by motorcycle enduro events, in 46min54.
At the Salisbury 5-4-3-2-1, runners and walkers are invited to take
on a variety of challenges. Nick Brooke went for the longest, the full
50km option, and finished in an excellent 4hr23m23 for the 30 miles,
taking the Male Veteran 55 title in the process. Gareth Ashmead (2hr42m57)
held off the challenge of the resurgent Fred Fox (2hr47m21), and Annie
Ashmead (3hr41m01) and Sue Fox (3hr44m58) all completed the 30km route,
whilst Darren O’Donnell finished the 10km race.
Wednesday saw the fifth race of the Summer 5km Series organised at
Yeovilton by the Yeovil Town Road Running Club. With a bumper turn out
of 181 runners, the race was won by Ian Habgood of Bounremouth AC in a
storming time of 15m16, ahead of Alex Milne of Enfield & Haringey (15m23)
and Wells City’s Jack Bancroft (15m56). Steve Goss of Exeter Harriers
took the Male Veteran 40 title as he finished in 4th place and 15m58,
whilst Kieran Young of Bristol & West won the Junior Male prize in 17m34.
Exeter’s Gordon Seward took what seems to be his monthly Veteran 50 prize
with a time of 17m35, and Roger Rowe of Exmouth Harriers won the Male
Veteran 60 title with 19m44.
In the Ladies race, Laura Parker of Wells City Harriers enjoyed an
excellent race to win, finishing in 9th place in the overall race and
crossing the line in 16m59, with Lucy Commander of South West Road Runners
second in 17m37. Honiton’s Jill Harrison finished as third lady in 18m15,
ahead of Jenny Moore of Wells who took the Female Veteran 45 title in 18m46.
Emily Smith of Wells was Junior Female winner in 19m29 and Lynda Faulkner of
Dorset Doddlers took the Female Veteran 35 prize with her time of 19m53.
Lesley Westgate of Maiden Newton Runners won the Female Veteran 55 title
with her finish of 22m58.
There were three wheelchair athletes taking part, with Dan Cook finishing
in 16m08, holding off David Cooke (17m03), whilst Hattie Dingle was pleased
with her time of 20m30 on her first ever road race.
The organising Yeovil Town Road Running Club were well represented on the
night, with Jon Rowe leading the way, finishing in a personal best time of
17m42, just ahead of Orlando Brooke (18m06) and Ed Gibbs (18m14). Mark Wills
had grown a special racing beard for the occasion, finishing in 18m57 as he
won the race with club mate Matt Driver (19m19).
Richard Boulter finished in a time of 20m12, finishing as the fastest of
three generations of the Boulter family were at the Yeovilton 5k on Wednesday
evening with mixed results. Richard as the elder statesman of the family was
left wondering how he can run 10k at a faster average speed than he can run
5k after finishing in 20:12. Maybe next time 2 laps would be a better idea
with the time taken on the 2nd lap! Eldest daughter Alexia Hill was cheered
home by her 2 children in her 1st ever race in 30:56. This after only 1 month
of running and most of that whilst pushing a pushchair! Alexia is now eagerly
looking forward to her next race whilst 4 year old son George wants to run in
the Children's race. Celebrating 1 year of running after her debut in the
August 2009 5k, Bryony Boulter produced another Personal Best time, finishing i
n 25:32, some one & a half minutes better than her previous best. Bryony is
now showing how well she has learned from her peers by claiming she would
have gone faster if she hadn't had to spend all day at work on her feet –
and remains to be convinced that she will run faster once she is wearing
Yeovil green & white!
Andy Merrick crossed the line in 20m16, ahead of the sprint to the line
between team mates Tony Watts (20m56) and Austin Luke (20m57), with Dave Boyer
not far behind in 21m24. Nigel Moysey was allowed out to play on his birthday
and made the most of it, finishing fast in 21m46, ahead of Simon Carr (22m31),
whilst Martin Chaffey made a rare excursion around the flat 5km course,
sprinting to a finish in 23m27. Dave Woan finished in 23m41 as he held off
the triple challenges of Sam Dunbar (24m23), Lesley Nesbitt (24m24) and
Bernice Ancill (24m26). Sophie Brooke (25m29) was acting as Club Ninja –
dressing in all black so that he team mates couldn’t pick her out! – and
snuck past Graham Watts (25m31) as a result! Sadie McClelland showed another
superb sprint finish as she came home in 27m31, ahead of Caroline Watts (27m50)
and Flora Brooke (28m10).
On Saturday’s Maiden NewTen Madness, Martin Lascelles enjoyed a cracking
run as he finished in 5th place and a time of 43m03 and Pete Jakeman shot
round in 45m26 – only to be disappointed that there was no trophy for the
leading Male Veteran 60! Lin Lascelles won the Ladies race with her time of
45m33 as she finished ahead of Matt Driver (46m27). Paula Goddard ran well
for her time of 50m12 as she won the sprint to the line with Richard Dodge
(50m17), and Nigel Moysey was not far behind in 50m45. Brian Mountjoy-Row
ran well for his time of 52m27 whilst Donna Elliott finished strongly in
53m53. Darren O’Donnell followed up his 5-4-3-2-1 10km with another strong
run, crossing the line in 57m11. Debbie Neal finished in 1hr01m10 as she held
off Graham Watts (1hr01m32), and Phil MacQuaid (1hr02m21) and Caroline Watts
(1hr04m47) both completed the course.

| Sherborne Castle Race cheque
presentation |
The Sherborne Castles 10km organised by the Yeovil Town Road Running Club in
March raised a total sum of £1,458, and this has been distributed by the Rotary
Club of Sherborne Castles who help with the race marshalling. With the Rotarians
adding to the funds from their charity accounjt, there will be a donation of £750
being made to the Rendezvous Club in Sherborne and a further £750 to the Four
Leaf Clover Club in Sherborne.
Ingrid Trill collected the cheque on behalf of the Rendezvous Club, and
indicated that the funds would be used towards the work of the Club, where
the aim is to help young people help themselves. The Club offers information
and advice, guidance and support for young people in Sherborne as well as
offering a meeting place and the ability to help them with a wide range of issues.
The Four Leaf Clover Club is part of the new Centre for Well Being based in
Sherborne and their cheque for £750.00 was collected by Liz McGaw. The Four
Leaf Clover Club will be using the funds received from the race towards upgrading
the Zest Café for a relaunch of the Centre in the Autumn, with further seating
and a counter that will allow more access for members of the community.
The Sherborne Castles 10km has been sponsored for the past four years by
Sherborne-based solicitors Dyne Drewett LLP. “We are proud to support a
successful local event and pleased to hear that such a fantastic amount that
has been raised for The Four Leaf Clover Club and The Rendezvous”, said
Senior Partner David Morgan.
The 2010 event was the last race at Sherborne Castle but there will be
a new event, the Great Western 10km to be held at Leweston School, near
Longburton, on Saturday 12th March 2011. The race has been run jointly by
the two clubs for over 10 years to raise money for local charities. The
new scenic route takes in Lillington, Knighton and goes through farmyards,
woods and orchards with the start and finish in the grounds of Leweston
School itself. The two clubs are hopeful that the event will continue to
attract the hundreds of runners who have supported it in the past when it
moves to its new location in March 2011.
The presentation of the Running Club’s donation to the Rotary Club of
Sherborne Castles took place at the new Leweston venue, with the cheque
presented by Peter Jakeman to 2009 Rotary President Michael Peart – before
the runners tested out the new course!

Single file traffic through the cornfield! |
There was a strong team of Yeovil Town Road Runners taking part in the Haselbury
Trail 10km on Wednesday evening organised by the Crewkerne Running Club. On a warm
evening, Martin Lascelles ran well to finish in 9th place overall and a time of 43m14
whilst wife Lin Lascelles finished as second lady in a time of 45m29, albeit both
were in the colours of Maiden Newton. First Yeovil vest across the line was clinging
to the athletic torso of Pete Jakeman (28th place and 46m43), with Matt Driver not
far behind in 48m23.Chloe Broughton (49m14), and Rob Adams (49m29) held
off the challenge of Richard Dodge (49m30). Nigel Moysey ran well for his time
of 52m38 ahead of new Yeovil team mate Simon Carr (53m14), and Craig MacPherson
stormed round the two lap course in a time of 54m18. Brian Mountjoy-Row conquered
the big hill on each of the laps to finish in 55m29, with Lesley Nesbitt (57m15)
heading a triumvirate of Club colleagues – Terry Byrne (57m22), Andy Hunt (57m42)
and the fast finishing Martin Chaffey (57m50), who paid the price for frequent
photo stops on the way round! Debbie Neal ran well for her time of 1hr00m32, and
Phil MacQuaid (1hr04m00) and Sue Hodges (1hr04m27) enjoyed a race long battle.
Caroline Watts finished in a time of 1hr06m36 whilst Marianne Hooper (1hr09m28)
and Val Hales (1hr14m13) both completed the course.

2 August 2010
There was a strong turn out of Yeovil Town Road Runners at the annual Sturminster
Newton Half Marathon on Sunday, where warm conditions and a hilly course made for an
interesting race. Richard Boulter finished in 1:28:20 in 40th place which was over
2 minutes faster than last year, worried that he might be disqualified for breaking
unwritten rule that says 'Though shall not pass the Club Chairman in a race'! That
Chairman is Nick Brooke, who finished with a time of 1hr28m28, ahead of husband and
wife team Martin and Lin Lascelles (1hr29m23 and 1hr29m25 respectively). New member
Robert Harris crossed the line in an impressive 1hr36m00 and Pete Jakeman resisted
the urge to race his usual rivals as he used the event as a training run, finishing
in 1hr38m06 – although the temptation to outsprint team mate Matt Driver (1hr38m21)
at the end proved too much!
Paul Allen continued his training for an Ironman event in Copenhagen as he finished
in 1hr41m06, ahead of Steve House (1hr44m00) and another Copenhagen-bound runner Jody
Foy (1hr50m20). Nigel Moysey made it to the start line despite overnight illness and
struggled round in 1hr52m35, with Kirsty Norman hard on his heels (1hr52m50). Kevin
Miller and Tors Greenwood (both 1hr55m42) made it a race to the line, and Paul McNeill
(2hr00m50) did his utmost to lose his future wife’s vote by beating fiancée Donna Smith
(2hr06m49) to the line – no doubt to get a cup of tea ready for her when she finished?!
Emma Dunn and Annie Ashmead finished together in 2hr06m59, with Flora Brooke (2hr17m01)
also finishing the event.
Terry Byrne made an emphatic return to his first love of Triathlon as he completed
the Concorde Tri in 6th place in his age category. He noted that he hit a maximum speed
of 36 mph on the downhill section on the cycle leg – but only about 3.6mph going up the
other side!
On 15th August club members, Paul Allen and Jody Foy, and Jody’s girlfriend, Claire
Chedzoy, are to compete in "Challenge Copenhagen", an Ironman distance Triathlon. This
is a swim of 2.4 miles, cycle of 112 miles, and run of 26.2 miles - all "without stopping"!
Jody says: "I am raising money for the George Thomas Hospice and looking for any donation
you might be able to give.
The George Thomas Hospice is providing essential care to a dear friend of mine, Angela
Chamberlain. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in her early twenties and being in
remission until very recently, she has now been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer.
Angela is only 30 and has been a truly amazing friend of mine for over 20 years.
